NEW THINKING IN FILM

NEW THINKING IN FILM

ART FILM MEETS ENTERTAINMENT

New times after a crises

Every third decade is more artistic.

The period of change is now.

There are psychological reasons, after a decade of entertainment many people get tired of superficial TV series and movies and demand more for the mind and soul.

In the 1920s, the blossoming happy twenties, more people went to the cinema than any other decade. There was a lot of mass production and entertainment. Following the great Depression the movie industry had to adapt to smaller budgets.

In 1929/1930 Surrealist Films like Un Chien Andalou, Luis Bunuel and Le sang du'n poéte, Jean Cocteau changed cinema forever.

In the 1950s, TV commercials. Pin ups, body-building were popular.

An entertaining decade.

In 1960's cinemas had a new crises where using smaller budgets and art film scene became hugely popular. Ingmar Bergman, Michelangelo Antonioni, Hiroshi Teshigahara are three favorites of mine. Psychology was again popular (as in surrealism) and Hitchcock followed the trend creating psycho (1960)

In the 1980s, Video, MTV, TV series/ Soap operas were popular.

An entertaining decade.

In 1990's smaller productions and independent movies yet again grew in popularity. And yet again Europe were in the front row from the start. For me this postmodern decade lasted until 2002.  The experimenting with time and gender, and camera techniques and deeper aspects of life.  Kieslowski, Almodóvar, Danish Dogma, and yes, I include movies such as Memento (2000), Donnie Darko (2001), Mulholland drive (2001) to the '90s'.

In the 10s, Big production, TV series and platform based media such as Netflix became popular.

In the 20s's we will yet again see the rise of meaningful TV & cinema and independent movies and series getting more popular. A smaller team usually generates more personal stories with greater impact on audiences.

Social, economical, and environmental issues and filmic sustainability will yet again prove the winner. Europe will be leaders.

I believe in movies and TV-series that last for more than decades and aim for hundreds of years.

Environmental filmmaking

I have ten years of experience in environmental film making in smaller teams, and I hope I to keep that also when combining commercial film and art film.

I have learned to do a lot with little. Economical thinking with high quality is the new era.

Art in film

Every third decade is more artistic in film and TV and I have targeted the 20's for the for the past decade. Film is a lot about long-term work, keeping a common thread throughout aspects of film making skills and project.

I want to serve as a bridge between TV entertainment and masters of cinema. Many people who only watch TV series and movies as entertainment or a time to relax without thinking are curious to get more out of their watching and I want to serve that purpose.

Artistic and social values are qualities of the new era.

the Collaborative film

Small teams have many benefits for the quality of the film.  A small team can collaborate closely to get a deeper common understanding. The movie gets more 'alive' and less of a production 'with little to say' to the audience.

Meaningfulness is easier to present to the audience with a small film team. And the cosy feeling of being a small team, in which the collaborative feeling is greater than it is in a big production. Being friendly is what I hope for among people I work with. Though, being friendly is not being 'nice'. It's important to speak out, and letting people be themselves. An open-minded atmosphere in which you are free to say what you think or feel is necessary. This open-mindedness is easier in a small group. I've learned to deal with conflict early and I've never experienced long-term conflicts.

the Process of filmmaking

In 2010's the finished script was an unspoken bible of film production. In Sweden and many other countries, people who used an artistic process were overlooked unless already famous. In Sweden Ruben Östlund and Roy Andersson criticized this one-sided way to look at film production.

I often invite actors and film crew to take a bigger part of the making of the movie and/or the screenplay. It is not a requirement and it doesn't suit everyone though I lean a bit towards collaborative theatre using work shops and starting filming scenes before screenplay is written.

The experimental approach has been overlooked. It can't be overlooked anylonger. The audiece needs it.

the Therapy of film

An actress told me it was therapy to work with me, and i know that acting often has a theraputic effect. Though, I believe even more so in my collaborations.

I provide health benefit for both actors and collaborative film members. My collaborations are focused on deeper aspects of life to be positive for health. Even more so if you are ready to explore yourself and learn more about who you are (in this moment). I've learned to follow and develop my intuition to lead a happy life and I know how to stay positive even through tough times.

In the end the collaborative production will also benefit the well being of the audience.
