I was a key experts in a task force designed to complete the biggest truck project, VOLVO FH. Yes, it was presented by Van damme epic split. At the time Volvo, made a major change every eighth year.
Working with UX/infotainment at Volvo was both about designing the digital information on the dashboard, the infotainment system in front of the driver, as well as the UX of the remote control and back seat entertainment.
The delays of the flagship product were costing billions of SEK and I made an important contribution, addressing the problem of how we needed to work. And a few days after this initiative a task force was formed, in which I was included. Our task was to finish the truck project. I was the least experienced in the group of five key experts - so my contribution was addressing the issue. At least that's what I heard from others.
At a time when the company faced big problems with stress related abscence, my team stood out in a positive way scoring high on well-being.
I built a team of people from various countries and backgrounds. Half of us were men and half were women.
* The building of the team was made in cooperation with my manager, and the company I was contracted to.
I was the HMI lead (UX lead) of a prototyping team. I also started the user testing leading to a world new innovation of Cadillac. The work was similar to developing the UX on an iphone. We used a prototyping tool for animating the on screen interaction and Photoshop.
In times of crises our team outcompeted a team from India and one team from the USA.
I collaborated with Matt Highstrom and Andy Gellatly,
under Lars Andersson and Niclas Lindmark as the HMI Lead of the European GM site in Trollhattan.
I was the only European person involved in the chore team for the Cadillac Infotainment. Our live meetings were held in USA, I was attending using shared desktop and voice (from Sweden) and there were people calling in from Australia and India. Everyone worked, without complaining about time differences. From early morning to late night, wheras I was in office when people left friday afternoon.
I was ux designer and created a new HMI process, (UX process) across departments.
Leadership in crises - creating a positive atmosphere
I gave proposals on how to collaborate between departments, and was given the task to create a new HMI/design process. I lead the process under Niclas Lindmark.
Connecting people & departments
My major conribution was probably to bring people closer to each other, working together toward common goals.
Innovation gives hope
The manager of the electrical department said hundreds of people wanted to be part of the Infotainment project. Being early adopters is a way of giving hope to people in times of crises..
Safety and..
Working with cars I often had the words of Victor Papanek in mind, 'there are professions more harmful than industrial design, but only a very few of them..
..By designing criminally unsafe automobiles that kill or maim nearly one million people..
Both when working and afterwards I haven't been afraid to raise questions about safety.
Environmental issues
'..and by choosing materials and processes that pollute the air we breathe, designers have become a dangerous breed.' (Papanek, design for the real world)
Being in a truck company I met alot of people caring about the world we live in.
Future studies - environmental thinking
I made sketches on a future society with pod cars and visited the COP, United Nations - Climate Change Convention.
